Reflection upon my perspective that all humans are innately selfish

Yesterday, a friend told me "we are all inherently selfish." I argued the point as I sat and thought, 'we have to be more than that.' Humans are full of love, I insisted, the world just beats it down. Society says everyone is your own enemy, only one gets the crown. And while I agree that at the end of the day, maybe we wouldn't do anything if it didn't benefit us in some way. I must ask the question - is it selfishness, or just our biological programming? Either way, i don't think that's the part we should focus on. Awareness of our intentions, that's where the real worry should lie.
